In any compressed air system, contaminants are drawn from the atmosphere and the system itself. The compression process concentrates them, creating a real threat to your equipment and products. There are three primary contaminants.

Solid Particulates (Dirt)

Dust, wet dust, rust and foreign particles that cause abrasive wear and clog sensitive pneumatic components.

Water

Moisture (vapour, liquid and aerosols) condenses as air cools, leading to corrosion and promoting microbial growth.

Oil

Oil (liquid, droplets, aerosols and vapour) from oil-lubricated compressors or the ambient air. A critical contaminant for food, pharma and painting.

Two Filters’ Performance, One Element

Traditionally, removing solid particulate and oil aerosols required a coarse and a fine filter installed in series — two filters, each adding a pressure drop, each needing an annual element change.

The UD+ filter combines both filtration steps into one. Instead of a wet pressure drop of 0.53 bar(g) across two filters, the UD+ yields just 0.25 bar(g). You also replace only one element at service, not two.

Protecting the Compressor

Decoding Air Purity: ISO 8573-1:2010

To specify and verify filtration performance, the industry relies on ISO 8573-1:2010 — a universal language for defining the air quality a given application needs. It uses a three-number notation [P:W:O]:

  • [P] — purity class for solid Particles
  • [W] — purity class for Water (defined by pressure dew point)
  • [O] — purity class for total Oil

A lower number means higher purity. Class 1 for oil (≤ 0.01 mg/m³) is critical for food and pharma, while general-purpose air might be Class 4. Our team can determine the exact class you need.

Air Compressor Filter FAQs

How does an air compressor filter work?
An air compressor filter forces compressed air through a filter medium that captures contaminants like dust, oil aerosols and moisture. As the air passes through the media (often glass fibre or synthetic materials), particles are trapped and liquids coalesce into droplets that are drained away, so only clean air reaches your downstream equipment.
How do you clean an air compressor filter?
For high-efficiency coalescing filters (like the Atlas Copco DD/PD ranges), cleaning is generally not recommended. These filters trap microscopic particles deep within the media, and washing them damages the delicate fibres. Best practice is to replace the element annually or when the pressure drop becomes excessive.
How many filters are in an air compressor?
It depends on the system design. Internally, a screw compressor typically has an intake air filter, an oil filter and an oil separator. Downstream, you may have multiple line filters in series (e.g. a water separator, a general-purpose filter and a high-efficiency oil removal filter) to achieve the desired ISO air purity class.
What is the difference between Atlas Copco ZR and ZT?
Both are oil-free compressors; the main difference is cooling. The ZR is water-cooled, ideal where air ventilation is limited, while the ZT is air-cooled. Both require specific high-quality air filters to maintain their oil-free certification.
