Nitrogen Generator Fife

On-Site Nitrogen Generation Fife

Using a nitrogen generator with your compressed air system makes it simple to meet your nitrogen needs. Rather than relying on delivery, you can generate nitrogen to the required specification on demand.

How Nitrogen Generation Works

Nitrogen is one of the most abundant elements there is – it makes up 78% of the atmosphere, so generation is just a matter of separating the air’s components.

Membrane Separation

Membrane generators work by pushing compressed air through a membrane. The walls allow the oxygen and water vapour to escape, leaving nitrogen. They can achieve between 95% and 99.5% purity.

Pressure Swing Adsorption

Pressure swing adsorption generators use carbon molecular sieves. The smaller oxygen molecules bind to the sieve at pressure, leaving nitrogen. The system needs two chambers, with one generating nitrogen while the other regenerates at a lower pressure, releasing the oxygen. They can generate high purity gas, as much as 99.999% nitrogen.

The Uses Of Nitrogen

Like compressed air, nitrogen is used in a range of processes, and generators we’ve installed and maintained can be found throughout Fife. Uses include:

  • Food processing and packaging. Nitrogen can be used to displace oxygen and water vapour, which can harbour bacteria. A common use is to ‘flush’ packaging to increase shelf-life without additives.
  • Chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Nitrogen is relatively inert, and will not react with many chemicals and compounds, so it is used for everything from moving powders through a process to final packaging.
  • Electronics and fabrication. Processes like soldering can occur in a nitrogen environment, significantly reducing oxidisation and improving the quality of joins.

How Nitrogen Generators Can Help Your Business

Using a nitrogen generator isn’t just about the gas it provides; it offers some real benefits to your business.

Convenience

Using bottled nitrogen requires you to estimate use, arrange deliveries, and then manage those bottles, a big task if you use a lot. Generating your own nitrogen can be as simple as flicking a switch whenever you need the gas.

Environmental

The delivery of heavy gas bottles causes significant carbon emissions. These can soon mount up when you consider the deliveries that take place across the whole of Fife, and beyond. Installing a generator puts an end to polluting deliveries.

Savings

Because nitrogen is generated from the air, much of the price you pay is, actually, covering costs like delivery and maintenance of the bottling infrastructure. On-site nitrogen generation can see the unit cost of your nitrogen fall by up to half, and we’ve seen many businesses cover their investment costs in less than a year.

How To Get Started With Nitrogen Generation

Design Air (Scotland) is the compressed air and gas generation expert. We can start with a nitrogen assessment, looking at your use, processes, and current supply to determine the best options for you. We’ll even show you a calculation of the savings you can expect to make.

We can offer generators from the Atlas Copco range that meet your needs and support them with service options to ensure you continue getting the gas you require. We’ve installed hundreds of generators throughout Fife and Scotland, and the question we’re most often asked is ‘why didn’t we get one sooner?’ To take control of your nitrogen supply, contact us today.
