What are the three types of vacuum pumps?
The three main categories used in industry are oil-sealed pumps (like the rotary vane), dry vacuum pumps (like claw or screw pumps), and liquid ring vacuum pumps. Each suits a different ultimate vacuum and a different cleanliness of gas being pumped.
What is the difference between a dry and an oil-sealed vacuum pump?
An oil-sealed pump, like a rotary vane or the GHS screw pump, uses oil to lubricate components and create the vacuum seal. A dry vacuum pump, such as a dry claw or dry screw model, has no oil in the pumping chamber, which is essential for high-purity applications like food, pharma and electronics.
Which type of vacuum pump is best?
It depends on the application. For wet or dirty processes, liquid ring pumps are superior thanks to their tolerance for liquids. For general manufacturing where initial cost matters, oil-sealed pumps are often best. For clean environments, dry vacuum or scroll pumps are the required choice.
What is VSD technology?
VSD stands for Variable Speed Drive. The pump adjusts its motor speed to match the precise vacuum demand of your process in real time, instead of running at full power then switching off. This can reduce energy consumption by 50% or more.
Which type of compressor is used as a vacuum pump?
A screw compressor compresses air to create pressure, while screw pumps in vacuum applications work in reverse to evacuate air. Specific Atlas Copco pumps, like the GHS VSD+, use the same durable rotary screw element found in compressors, optimised for vacuum duty.
